Community Choirs

“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.”

-Margaret Wheatley

Thanks for visiting the Florida Community Choir page!  I hope the information here not only guides you or your choir in artistic pursuits, but helps to build community amongst our musicians in Florida.  Please visit these ensembles below!  Email me directly if you would like to be included on the list.

Additionally I have included my 2017-2018 Five Favorites of repertoire I programmed during the season.  Directors, please send me your Five Favorites (in the same format) to be included as well!

FIVE FAVORITES (Trent Brown, 2017-2018)

“Jenny Rebecca”

Carol Hall

arr. Claire McElfresh

Colla Voce 45-21035

SATB a cap.

A simple yet touching ballad to a newborn baby about all the exciting adventures that lie ahead, given from the narrator’s perspective of experience.  Visit this link to a recording from ACDA National by the Atlanta Master Chorale, Eric Nelson – Conductor.

“Best of All Possible Worlds” (from Candide)

Leonard Bernstein

arr. Robert Page

Boosey & Hawkes 00450006

SATB piano

In 2018 we celebrated the centennial of Leonard Bernstein.  This exciting an comedic work is a great closer for a set or concert.  The text urges us to always see the bright side of things!

“I Am Only One”

Adolphus Hailstork

Alliance AMP 3297730

SATB piano (also available SSA)

Hailstork’s setting was inspired by the events of 9/11.  “I am only one, but still I am one… I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.”  The text fits wonderfully with works focused on mission and purpose.

“The Heavens Are Telling” (from Creation)

FJ Haydn

G Schirmer 50322250

SATB piano

A common, yet exciting, “war horse” of the Classical era.  Three soloists are needed for the parts of the angels (soprano, tenor and baritone).  It is an accessible yet powerful addition to any program, especially any about nature.

“When Memory Fades”

arr. Eric Nelson

MorningStar Music Pub. 50-8914

SATB piano

This simple hymn set brilliantly by Eric Nelson allows singers to express their prayer for those afflicted by dementia.  The melody soothes and is harmonized with comforting tones that fills the spirit.  Follow this link to hear (again) Eric Nelson conduct the Atlanta Master Chorale.
